Joint Committee on Atomic Energy, regarding a significant and sensitive
item on the Middle East.
4. 0- JMM) Lunched with Ed Braswell, Chief Counsel,
House Armed Services; Committee, and filled him in on a sensitive
item on the developments in the Middle East. He arranged a date with
me and Senator Stennis for later in the day and also suggested that I
brief Senator Symington on the same matter.
5. 0- JMM) Met with Senator Stuart Symington and briefed him
on the above noted sensitive developments in the Middle East. He was
initially highly skeptical and suspicious that the Defense Department was
trying to "panic" the community. During the course of our conversation,
I told .him of the highly critical press attack on Mr. Helms; in connection
with.his testimony regarding the Watergate incident and asked if he would
agree to release a letter he had written to the Congressional Quarterly giving
Walters and Helms a clean bill of health. He said he would like to help, but
did not want to get any more involved than he was already.
6.
I- JMM) Met with Senator John Stennis and briefed .him.
on the sensitive Item on the Middle East. I told him that Senator Symington
was pressing for a Committee hearing on the Middle East, including
intelligence failures and other matters in which we were involved, on
Tuesday, 6 November 1973. Stennis confessed that his health really did
not permit him to chair the Committee hearing, and .he would try to
influence Symington to limit the briefing to the Agency Subcommittee only.
Lester Wolff (D. , N. Y. ) a personal letter for the Director.
