?;s ence coverage, of the countryside in Cambodia results from. a review
made during March by all departments in Washington concluding that Intel-
nce was not adequate. As a result, higher authority directed CIA,. on
the basis of an interagency recommendation, to send CLA, officers to Live
tarns in Cambodia. These personnel are included in the authorized total
of 200 U. S. personnel in Cambodia at any one time. In their intelligence
collection activities, the CIA personnel In the countryside do work with
Cambodian government and military officials in order to obtain reports of
activity in the countryside. CIA has no authority or intention to extend
this activity into paramilitary activities.
