Friday - 1 June 1973
1. Met with Erik Rasmussen, Legislative
Assistant to Representative Lee Hamilton (D. , Ind. ), and renewed the
Agency's offer to brief Representative Hamilton on South Vietnamese
detention or interrogation centers. I outlined again for him our relations
with our oversight committees and inability to report in writing on such
matters. Rasmussen appeared to be quite receptive and told me that he
would take the matter up with Representative Hamilton on Monday when he
returns to the city.
I met separately with Mike Van Dusen, Representative Hamilton' s
staffman on the Near East Subcommittee of House Foreign Affairs Committee,
and reviewed with him the briefing arrangements that have been followed over
the past several years with Representative Hamilton and the Subcommittee
chairmen of House Foreign Affairs Committee. Van Dusen said he would
speak to Rasmussen and to the Chairman to insure that this matter does not
get off the track again.
2. Met with Carol Katawczik, in the office
of Representative David Towell R. , Nev. ), and gave her a suggested
response together with additional background material for use in responding
to a constituent inquiry.
3. Met with Martha Griffith, in the office
of Representative Clarence Long (D, , Md. ), and gave her a draft response
for use in responding to a constituent concerning the Vietnam Council on
Foreign Relations. Miss Griffith said that if the Congressman has any
questions, she will call me.
