Thursday - 11 January 1973
9. Met with Frank Slatinshek, Chief Counsel,
House Armed Services Committee, whom I briefed on recent developments
regarding the Chinese strategic missiles, Soviet aircraft carrier construction,
Soviet military supplies for Syria and the gradual build up of Soviet forces in
the Far East.
Slatinshek indicated the Defense Department was making a big thing
out of their earlier insistence that the new Soviet vessel was indeed an
aircraft carrier, despite the Agency's initial skepticism.
Regarding the upcoming European trip of Chairman Nedzi, Intelligence
Operations Subcommittee, on which he had requested a briefing, Slatinshek
said Nedzi was not going under the auspices of the Armed Services Committee
and suggested that I call Nedzi directly to fix a time for a briefing. However,
Slatinshek said he wants to be sure to be present. He understands Nedzi will
be leaving about 24 January 1973.
10. Talked to Art Kuhl, Senate Foreign Relations
Committee staff, who said they still hoped to schedule the Director for 10:00 a. m.
on Wednesday, 17 January. They concur in our proposal for a presentation of
about one hour followed by questions. He said they would confirm tomorrow.
11. Called Miss Coffey, Staff Assistant to
Representative Edward Koch, in response to Koch's 28 December letter to
the Director inquiring about Agency training of the New York police.
Miss Coffey said no one in the Washington office knew anything about the
matter and since Koch was not expected back before the Inauguration, I should
call him in his New York office. Two attempts were made to reach him there,
without success.
12. Delivered to Frank Slatinshek, Chief Counsel,
House Armed Services Committee, an analysis of the Federation of American
Scientists' Newsletter which Slatinshek had requested.
