On 25 July 1973 the undersigned was informed by Acting Deputy Director for Personnel Security, that he had received a call from 25X1 concerning a request for information from an aide of the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee. Because 25X1 recognized that the subject matter was not his field, he referred the matter to the undersigned. 2. Requestor of the information was Jack Norpel of the above mentioned Senate Subcommittee. This subcommittee comes under the Senate Judiciary Committee. The request was for information on the technical feasibility of "hot miking" a telephone without access to the telephone. Mr. Norpel had told that he did not wish to have any, classified information on this subject but did want to know whether the possibility existed. 3. The undersigned urged to find out as much as he could about the origin of this telephone concern and whether any further information is desired because the Technical Division, Office of Security is interested in this subject matter. It would like to know for instance whether the inquiry stemmed from a sales pitch of an automatic telephone disconnector company or whether it was a matter of only general interest stemming from Watergate or similar current affairs. said he would do this and would pass the information to the undersigned. said that he would probably meet with Mr. Norpel on 2 my to discuss this matter.
