I John Goldsmith, Senate Armed Services Committee staff, called to say he would like me to come over and look at the galley proofs of the transcript of the Director's appearance in connection with our legislation, which they plan to make public. 2. reported that a re orter from the Louisville Courier Journal had called him on the cases in followup of his conversations with Schwartz' sister, Mrs. or an, and with Senator Marlow Cook's (R. , Ky. ) office. Subsequently I called Mrs., McElroy, in the Senator's office, and she assured me that whatever had been provided David Kindred was limited to the statement I had left with the Senator. 3. At the request of John Goldsmith, Senate Armed Services Committee staff, reviewed the galley proofs of the 5 April hearing on S. 1494 and made several minor changes. I told Goldsmith that the revision of Senator Symington's question on Laos, which we had not seen previously, created an erroneous impression that the Director runs the war in Laos and the unfortunate implication that he was also responsible for resumption of the B-52 bombing. Goldsmith saw the point and will take it up with Kathy Nelson, of Symington's staff. I told him I hoped something could be done because we could not approve the galleys in their present form, suggesting at the minimum that Symington's statement "Your Agency runs the war operations in Laos" be changed to "Your Agency runs operations in Laos. " 4. Called Miles Costick, staff assistant to Representative Ben Blackburn (R., Ga.), and confirmed a briefing on Soviet East/West trade to be given on Tuesday morning, 24 April, in Blackburn's office by OER.
