12. (Confidential - GLC) I IC Staff, called to check on 25X1
the availability of the House Appropriations Committee report on the Defense
appropriations bill. Foster said Dr. Hall had called them and expressed his
concern about a portion of the report (page 129) containing a recommendation
that the staff of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Intelligence) be reduced.
Hall is upset because his office is apparently the only one designated for this
kind of reduction. I tol~that we were in touch with Ralph Preston, 25X1
Staff Assistant, House Appropriations Committee, about the report but it
would not normally be available until sometime tomorrow. 1said this 25X1
was soon enough for his purposes.
13. (Confidential - JMM) Chairman Lucien Nedzi, Intelligence Sub-
committee, House Armed Services Committee, called to say he understood
there had been some changes in our plans regarding the disposal of SAT-and
he would like to be brought up to date. I told him I would have this done
tomorrow.
Nedzi said Seymour Hersh, of the New York Times, had been querying
him about the St. George article in Harper's magazine but more recently
Hersh has told Nedzi that he "was not buying" St. Ceorge's allegations. Nedzi
also said Laurence Stern, of the Washington Post, had been probing regarding
the Martinez/Hunt connection but Nedzi had referred him to the findings of
the Nedzi Subcommittee report.
14. (Unclassified - FMC) Received a call. from Kent Hu hes in the
Library of Congress requesting the telephone extension of 25X1
of our Agency regarding information on regulatory policies on energy. I
contacted ho said he would be more than glad to get 25X1
in touch with Hughes, and if he could not help, find someone who could.
15. (Internal Use Only - JGO) Met with William Phillips, Staff Director,
Subcommittee on Foreign Operations and Government Information, and advised
him that the information requested of the C&P Telephone Company in the
Committee's letter of 15 October will be furnished directly to the Committee
by the C&P Telephone Company. The Committee had requested that the phone
company reply directly in order that the compilation and statistical analysis
of similar information being acquired from many agencies of Federal Government
can be handled in a single format by the GAO who is providing staff su ort for
the Subcommittee in this study. Office of Security, and
Office of Communications, have been advised.
