Saturday - 17 June 1972
1. (Confidential - JMM) After consulting the Director, I called
Richard Perle, on the staff of the Subcommittee on National Security and
International Operations, to say that it was the Director's ijnderstandingr that
our briefing in response to several questions which we had received via
Perle was to be given to the Senator himself rather than staff personnel only.
I said there would, of course, be no objection to cleared members of the staff
being present. Perle said this was contrary to his understanding and he
would consult the Senator.
Shortly thereafter, Perle called to say that he had consulted the
Senator who had agreed to meet with us at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, 19 June in
his office to receive the briefing. However, Perle indicated he hoped this
would not involve a precedent for the future, since the Senator relied heavily
on his staff to keep him up-to-date on developments regarding the Soviet
strategic picture.
2. (Confidential - JMM) After consulting the Director and Mr. Osborn,
I called Chairman Lucien Nedzi, Intelligence Operations Subcommittee, and
Chief Counsel Frank Slatinshek, House Armed Services, and Ed Braswell,
Chief Counsel, Senate Armed Services Committee- to a.sg?rP them that
that we be sure to keep him promptly and fully informed of any future developments
that might conceivably involve the Agency.
