OFFICE OF LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL
Monday - 16 July 1973
1. (Internal Use Only - JGO) Received a call from Charles Nagel,
a summer intern in the office of Representative Bob Eckhardt (D. , Tex. ).
Nagel is one of 70 students from the University of California in Berkeley
here on summer internship. He said that his group had been given a tour
of the Agency two years ago and asked if similar arrangements could be
made for this year's group. After checking with Angus Thuerrner, Assistant
STAT to the Director, I called OTR, who said he would return
Nagel's call and offer a briefing for the group on the Hill at their convenience.
2. (Unclassified - GLC) Talked to Mr. Carpenter, on the staff of the
Ervin Committee, about the possible appearance of Ambassador Helms and
Generals Walters and Cushman before the Committee later this month. I
told him we had been in contact with Ambassador Helms and added that he
would be in Washington and available during the week of 30 July if the Committee
wants to have him testify. I told him that I assumed they would want the three
men to appear within the same time frame. Mr. Carpenter said their schedule
is still very fluid but they had talked recently about having these three men up
during the week of 30 July and he would let us know as soon as something
definite is decided. I told him I would be away for two weeks but he could
call Mr. Maury or Mr. Houston.
3. (Unclassified - GLC) Received a call from Mr. Robert J. Monahan,
Assistant Director for Security, OSD, who is doing a security review of the
DOD position of the joint CIA/DIA hearing on Laos /MASF of 27 June. Monahan
offered his assistance if we needed it. Later in the day I told him that I had
returned a copy of the transcript to the Senate Armed Services Committee
with a_ suggestion that an unclassified version of Colby's statement which we
had provided be inserted in the record in lieu of Colby's prepared classified
statement with a notation' in the transcript to this effect. Monahan said he would
merely note in the copy of the transcript they are sending to the Committee
that they would defer to CIA with respect to Colby's testimony.
