1. (Confidential - JMM) Called Frank Slatinshek, Chief Cozens el,
House Armed Services Committee, and read to him relevant passages from
Mr. Helms' cable denying any knowledge or approval of Howard Hunt's
surveilling activities on Senator Goldwater.
2. (Confidential - JMM) Read to Chairman_ Lucien Nedzi, Intelligence
Subcommittee, House Armed Services Committee, Helms' statement denying
knowledge or approval of Howard Hunt's surveilling of Senator Goldwater and
related activities. Nedzi commented that the Post "has egg on its face and I
am going to tell them so. "
3. (Confidential - JGO) Met with Ralph Preston, Staff Assistant,
House Appropriations Committee, and gave him a draft letter for the
Chairman's use in reporting the approval of the Agency budget to the
Director of OMB. have been advised. 25X1
4. (Unclassified - JGO) Talked to Marian Czarnecki, Chief of Staff,
House Foreign Affairs Committee, who told me he has not .forgotten. our
request for a set of the atrocity pictures given the Rosenthal Subcommittee
on Europe on their recent visit to Israel. He will check on it as soon as an
appropriate occasion arises.
5. (Confidential - JGO) Met with Mike Finley, House Foreign Affairs
Committee staff, and told him that the Agency has been in regular coordination
with State Department representatives on the The Depart-
ment has the responsibility for balancing all of the interests of the U. S.
Government in this matter. The Agency interest is only one of these interests.
Finley thanked me for the advice and told me he would advise Representative
Dante Fascell to deal directly with the Department on this matter. Finley said
Fascell and Representative Whalen and possibly others will be travelling to
Venezuela and other South American countries beginning around the second of
January. He asked if I would see what Agency unclassified energy information
is available for Committee use relating to South America.
