1. I I GLC) Met with Janice Brodsky, in the office of
Senator J. Glenn Beall, Jr. (R. Md. to discuss the constituent inquiry
the Senator had received from a about alleged Agency
involvement in the coup gave iss rod sky our assurances that
CIA had nothing to do with the coup and also indicated it was our understanding
that Senator McGee's Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere Affairs of
Foreign ~s Committee plans to hold hearings on the recent develop-
ments in Misp Bra odskc said she thought this was all she needed
for their response to
Later in the day David Rust, Legislative Aide to the Senator, called
to see if we could provide them with a written response, along the lines of
my conversation with Miss Brodsky. We discussed the matter at some length
and he indicated that he had also asked the,State Department for comment on
I letter. It was agreed that if they received an authoritative denial
from ate on this they would need nothing further from us. Meanwhile I
said we would check to see if we could find any record of a statement by a
responsible U. S. official indicating that the Agency was not involved in the
coup.
2. I I GLC) Picked up from Jack Ticer, Senate Armed
Services Committee staff, final page proofs of Mr. Colby's open confirmation
hearings. Ticer said it is possible that the official print of these hearings
will be available as early as tomorrow.
:[ left with Ed Braswell, of the Committee staff, Mr. Colby's classified
letter of 1 October to Chairman Stennis with a carbon copy to Senator Symington
on the subject of the funding of the Laos irregulars. Braswell said he would
get the letters in the hands of the addressees.
