U?tJi\'F!DEJ\JfJ `+ IA INT ERNAL: USE ONLY AL 8.1 Received a call from Ron Tammen, 25X1 Legislative Assistant enator William Proxmire (D. , Wis. ), concerning a crank letter the Senator received from who among other things claims CIA for 17 years has been controlling is mind with a laser device. I told Tammen that we had recently responded to several other congressional inquiries regarding ssertions 25X1 and that in sum and substance there was nothing to this and our files indicate that as emotionally disturbed. Tammen said this satisfied the ena.:or, s nee s. 9.1 Attended the Legislative Interdepartmental Group meeting at the White House to discuss various options with respect to /Che Defense appropriations bill, Foreign Assistance Act, and the State authori- zation bill. Tom Korologos, in the absence of Bill Timmons, who was travelling with the President, chaired the session. There are no specific follow-up actions for the Agency, and the next LIG meeting to get a reading on the status of actions is tentatively scheduled for 10 September. (See Memorandum for the Record.) 10. in follow-up to my call on Friday, spoke with Chairman Wayne L. Hays (D., Ohio), Subcommittee on State Department Organization and Foreign Operations, House Foreign Affairs Committee, concerning the possibility of a role of the ambassador amendment to the State ''authorization bill, which is scheduled for the floor this week. He eventually agreed that he could support our position in conference, but along the way made a number of points in forceful language. (See Memorandum for the Record.) 11.1 Accompanied the Director and Messrs. Duckett, Lams, Waller and Hepworth to a meeting with the Special Group, House Appropriations Committee, to discuss a number of Agency programs and provide an abbreviated current intelligence briefing.
