25X1A9a 1. Colonel who is attending Project USEFUL, was in to talk
with me about the possibility of employment by CIA after his retirement sometime with-
in the next couple of years. I explained the difficulties which one encounters when re-
tired for longevity and discouraged him in this respect; however, I told him that if he
wanted any further information or assistance to feel free to contact me.
2. George Carey telephoned to say that a Mr. Green in the Department of Com-
merce had requested that Mr. Bagnall, or someone else from the Foreign Documents
Division, accompany him to a Hearing at the Bureau of the Budget sometime next week
at which he will request $1, 000, 000 or more for the translation of scientific literature.
George and I agreed that the wisest course would be to have Mr. Green write us a let-
ter asking for whatever information he wanted, such as the cost of translation per page
of the various languages, and that we could respond in an unclassified reply. However,
we felt it unwise to appear at the Bureau of the Budget in support of a request from an-
other agency. (On 26 November Bob Macy, Bureau of the Budget, telephoned me about
this and I told him of the position I had taken. He seemed appreciative and thought that
this was entirely correct. I told him that if he wanted any further information from us
we would be glad to supply it.)
3. reported that the specifications for the grading contract at Lang-
ley were all in order and with my permission will return them to the General Services
Administration with authority to advertise for bids.
