Approved For Release 2000//08: CIA-Si.l{183RO003000201 f&4 DD/S 30 September 1958 25X1A9a 1. buzzed to say that the Director felt that the list of speakers for our junior Officer Trainee group was too ambitious and that he did not feel we could ask people of this level to come down and speak to this particular group. However, inasmuch as Matt Baird indicated that the Director did approve of individuals of this calibre in his previous conversation, the Director said that he would talk with Matt about it. I told Jack that I would particularly like to sit in on the conversation. 2. I notified Mr. Kirkpatrick of our tentative trip to on 17 25X1A6a and 18 November 1958. This is agreeable with him. 3. Deputy Chief, Military Personnel Division, was up with a letter to the Air Force in response to one from them indicating that they would delete all Air Force nonreimbursable positions in CIA effective 1 January 1959. I signed the letter which merely indicated that this had not been discussed with us and that we had made no budgetary provisions to pick up this tab, and requested that this action be post- poned until at least 1 July 1959; in the meantime we would consult with the Air Force representatives to determine whether or not this was an appropriate action. I asked to advise me of the status of the negotiations with the Air Force within 4. I approved of Jim Garrison going on two weeks of active duty with the Navy beginning 24 November 1958. 5. The Director advised me that he may be out of town on the 10th of October when Operation Alert 1958 will be discussed at the Cabinet Meeting and if so, would like me to attend. However, he will clear this with the White House. 25X1A9a 6. advised me that the Director was very much in favor of sending our letter to Mr. Ellsworth concerning the possible consideration of for 25X1A9a the President's Award for Outstanding Civilian Service. There is still some question as to whether or not the Director may want to change the text somewhat but no further action on our part is necessary at this time.
