Approved For Relea 2001/03`/ 22': CIAiRb 76-0018300300060057-5 DIARY NOTES 25X1A DDS 3 May 1960 25X1A9a 1. Met with Jim Garrison anto discuss landscaping changes at the new building. There are three large areas in which trees are growing in a considerable depression. Water collects to such an extent that drains are plugged up; consequently, the areas are not only unsightly but in all probability the trees are going to die before we move into the building. Mike Rapuano of Clarke and Rapuano admits that his people made a mistake in trying to preserve these trees. It is now estimated that it will cost some $60, 000 to rectify it, especially in view of the fact that there is not sufficient dirt available to fill in all three of the holes. I authorized to go ahead an25X1 A9a negotiate to fill in one of them---for which we do have ample dirt---and to contemplate, at least for the moment, on filling in the other two if and when we construct an auxiliary building, at which time we will again have plenty of "fill" available without buying it. 25X1A9a 25X1 A6a 2. I asked to start, without delay, the preparation of a paper on "hous ing for submission to the Project Review Committee. 1 A9a 25X1A6a 4. Jim Garrison contacted Mr. Wallace, Commissioner of Public Buildings, to as- certain the status of negotiations for the Arcade Sunshine Building. Mr. Wallace assured Jim that the Public Buildings Service would not let this building slip through its fin rs. However, there is now a possibility that we may get equivalent footage at the which would avoid the leasing of commercial space. 25X1A6a 5. John Tietjen was in for a briefing and reported that he planned to leave on or about 8 June for the medical conference so as to be there on 13 June. I ap- proved of this idea in principle sometime earlier. 25X1 A6a 6. I approved of Gordon Stewart departing on a trip to Europe on 6 June. 25X1 A6a 7. George Carey, Office of Operations, telephoned to complain about a contract at wherein he thought that GSA's charges were excessive. I have had Jim Gar- rison look into this and am satisfied that GSA's charges are high; therefore, Jim is going to write a letter to them to this effect. However, there does not appear to be any alternative but to go ahead with this project at the present time. I asked Jim to call George and explain the whole matter to him.
