a Approved For Relea5. 2000/08/27 44AIP76-00183W00300110096-6 25X1A DD/S 1. At the Deputies' Meeting this morning: a. I learned that the President had personally requested that all road signs indicating the direction to the new building be taken down. I contacted the National Park Service, and the Office of Security con- tacted the Virginia Highway Department; all signs on the Parkway, as well as Highway No. 123, were removed promptly. 2. I had several conversations with the Logistics people and Stan Grogan 25X1 A6a concerning the press release for We agreed to allow General Serv- ices Administration to make a release but would not allow them to identify it with this Agency or to answer any further questions. In view of this, they decided not to make a release. 25X1A9a 25X1A9a 25X1A9a 25X1A9a 3. Mr. McCone has decided to hire who was formerly a chauffeur for General Clay. He will be a combination chauffeur-gardener-butler for the McCones and will be on Mr. McCone's personal payroll. 4. was in for a few minutes and talked to me about Hal is now at Harvard University and wants him when he returns to go with the Commercial Staff. I told Vern that it was my view that he would be a very good man for CM but that he should change his career designation if he should decide on this assignment. 5. Vern advised me that the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Uni- versity was going to offer their February course to women and that he thought anyone we might nominate certainly would be acceptable. I told Vern that if he wanted to take annual leave after he returned from Harvard I thought that this would be a very good time to do so. 25X1A9a 6. buzzed to say that General Cabell wanted to see the paper that I had prepared for Mr. Mc Cone dealing with reorganization. I delivered the paper to General Cabell. (On Tuesday, 14 November, I had reason to believe that General Cabell had turned over this paper to Mr. Kirkpatrick; accordingly, I telephoned Gen- eral Cabell and asked whether I could pick up the paper and deliver it to Mr. McCone. I told him that I thought this was a breach of our gentlemen's understanding and, in fact, spoke quite strongly about it. General Cabell refused to accept my "rebuke, " as he put it, and felt that he had not violated any confidence since he thought that Mr. McCone had, in fact changed the ground rules. I told him that if this were the case I thought that I should have been notified and that he had no right to do anything with the paper before I had had an oppor- tunity to deliver it to Mr. McCone, except to give it back to me. He agreed to retrieve the paper and I picked it up and had it delivered to Mr. Mc Cone's office. Later in the day I met with Mr. McCone, Mr. Dulles, General Cabell, and Mr. Kirkpatrick to talk about certain reorganization problems and this paper was considered. Mr. McCone made no comments as to whether he liked the paper or not but merely said that he wished to study it further before making any comment on it.)
