1. Jim Garrison reported that we have not yet received the letter from the Public
Buildings Service concerning the status of the headquarters building. However, Jim was
reasonably certain that when we did get it, it would say that the South half of the building
would be in approximately the same condition on or about 5 February as the North half 25X1
was when we moved into it in September.
4. I walked through the space belonging to the Office of Security in the headquarters
building today. They are all very pleased because what they have is such a tremendous
improvement over the arrangements in the old buildings. However, they certainly are
stacked in pretty tightly and I am completely sympathetic to their request to move out
twenty people back to Alcott Hall. I talked to bout this and asked him t25X1
ascertain whether the space in Alcott Hall was sti avai a e and to discuss this with me
sometime within the next few days. This problem is outlined in a memorandum dated
29 December 1961 from the Director of Security to the Deputy Director (Support) which I
have sent to the Director of Logistics.
5. I talked to General Cabell about Shef Edwards and particularly sought his views
as to whether I should ask Shef to remain on after he became eligible for retirement next
June. I told him that I had in mind asking Shef to remain on for a while and that I felt that
this might be psychologically good inasmuch as Shef is pretty sensitive on this point and
does not want his departure to appear in any way to be connected with the change in the
Administration of the Agency. General Cabell said he thought that this was a good idea
but emphasized that he would not be here to support the action and therefore could only
advise me without accepting any responsibility.
