DIARY NOTES
DD/S 17 May 1962
1. Bob Ayers of Government Services, Inc., telephoned with regard to the
cafeteria arrangements for telephone company employees. He said that the North
cafeteria would not be adequate to accommodate all of our people for breakfast and
that it would definitely be a losing proposition for him if he had to open it for only
a few people. He declined to do this unless he was asked to do so from a very
responsible level. We discussed the matter at some length, and he said finally
that he would open the North cafeteria if I personally asked him to do so (this
decision to fall squarely on my back). I told Bob that I would like to make a factual
study on the number of people involved before taking a definite position. (I do not
wish to compromise our security practices, but at the same time I am reluctant to
be in a position of asking GSI to undertake the losing operation because of the security
practices. I have asked Mr. Lloyd to study this matter in detail.)
2. Larry Houston telephoned to say that had expressed some 25X1A9a
interest in serving a tour of duty on the IG staff. I told Larry that I would be glad
to consider John along with other DD/S nominees. 25X1C1al
3. General Carter and Mr. McCone visited the display of -transmitters
and receivers in the Office of Communications, and both seemed to be extremely well
pleased. I have urged them to visit the Signal Center sometime within the next few
days.
4. Shef Edwards alerted me to a proposal which he was submitting asking for
about thirty additional people in order to cut down his investigative backlog and stay
current thereafter.
5. General Carter requested that I furnish him a brief memorandum explaining
the history of the succession list which we are required to furnish the Office of
Emergency Planning.
6. Mr. Ben F. Givens, Assistant Vice-President of the American Telephone
and Telegraph Company, was in for a brief visit. He is opening a new AT&T office
in Washington, D. C., to deal with the Government on any problem of any kind
affecting AT&T or any of the component companies. His call was merely one of
courtesy. Mr. met with us for a few minutes, after which
I took Mr. Givens to for a visit.
