1. (Unclassified - GLC) Talked with Jim Kronfeld, Subcommittee on
Foreign Operations and Government Information of House Government Operations
Committee staff, concerning Representative Bella Abzug's bill, - TU_ R 144'kr and
other similar bills now pending before the Subcommittee. He said they had
a full exemption for the Agency in a new Committee bill and thought that was
the only way of solving our problem.
2. (Unclassified - GLC) In response to her call to the Director, I
talked with Mrs. Fran Temko, in the office of Representative Bella Abzug,
regarding Mrs. Abzug's bill to permit individuals to have access to Government
records on them, N_ R_ 14435_ Tread her the letter the Director sent to
Chairman Chet Holifield giving the Agency comments on the bill and requesting
appropriate exemption. She said in a chat with the Director last night, he
indicated he might be able to accept language such as "which would reveal
intelligence gathering operations of the U. S. G overnment, " in lieu of the
flat CIA exemption. I disagreed and told her why.
3. (Confidential - GLC) Talked to Jack Marsh, Assistant to the
Vice President for National Defense, about signing him and Robert Hartmann,
the Vice President's Chief of Staff, for certain compartmented clearances.
I will stop by their office in the next few days and sign them up.
4. (Unclassified - GLC) Called Sam Dash, Chief Counsel, Select
Committee on Presidential Campaign Activities, and asked what the reactions
were to the Director's. letter to Senator Ervin regarding the Baker report and
related materials. Dash indicated that yesterday Chairman Ervin made a
statement to the press that he had found no evidence of CIA involvement in the
