I (Called Marian Czarnecki, on the House Internatioddj x e1 ions committee staff, to talk with him about the call we had received from Donald Duskie, new Staff Director of the Special. Subcommittee on Future Foreign Policy Research and Development. I told Czarnecki that Duskie was interested in establishing a point of contact with our office and with Czarnecki's agreement we would set that up. Czarnecki said that would be fine. I also told Czarnecki that I was not certain that the Director would be available for a meeting with the Committee this Wednesday as Czarnecki had indicated might be desired but we agreed to cope with this problem. if and when it arises. I told him that if the Director was not available, General Walters would be happy to talk to the Committee about the value of - -17j- ' -I" icx i..Lvit;i Committee staff, regarding Chairman George H. Mahon's (D., Tex.) call to the White House last Thursday expressing concern and reservations about the investigations. also talked with him about a meeting with the Defense Subcommittee before the mark-up of our Appropriation bill. Boos finally concluded that this would not be a good time to get together and it was agreed that he would call me later on to set another date. 8. Don Spiegel, on Senator Hubert H. Humphrey's (D. , Minn, staff, called to say that he and several other staff mem.bers would be traveling to the Middle East during the August recess and asked if briefings could be arranged prior to that time. He indicated that Stephen Bryen, who is now on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee staff, Dick Moose and Frank Balance would possibly be going with him. Spiegel is going to check on Balance's security clearance situation and I am to work out a suggested time for briefings and be k in touch with him. They did not realize the length of the project but are working on them as fast as they can. She said she will let me know when they are finished. 6. 7. 1 David Martin, Senate Internal Security Subcommittee staff, called and asked for a computer printout of the activities of any substantive information on any of his activities, 'a list: of any U. S. Communist Party delegations that have gone to Communist meetings outside the U. S., and anything on International Communist Conferences. I uis checking this out. Called Bill Hogan, I-louse Armed Services Hogan asked about the staff memorandum that was mentioned in today's papers concerning Mr. Colby and the Rockefeller Commission. I said I didn't know the story on that but that the Commission did say in their report that overall they thought it was best to have a non- career man in the top job. I added they also thought that some part of the budget should be made public. Hogan felt this was terrible. He said as a matter of fact it probably is a blessing during these difficult days to have a career man who can understand the situation better. I heartily agreed. 25X1A 9.
