I also asked him if the Senator might like a briefing prior to his trip to the Soviet Union. Spiegel said it was his fault that he did not get in touch with us earlier as he was sure the Senator would have appreciated a briefing but that he would be in touch with us upon the Senator's return. CONF(DENTIAI. Page .5 21.1 Called I)an Spiegel, in the office of 22 Frank Slatinshek, Chief Counsel, House Armed Services Committee, called to request technical assistance for the Committee's scheduled visit t,SnWill I told Slatinshek that we would be glad to provide a briefing. 25X1: 23. I I Stuart Statler, Permanent STATOTHR Subcommittee on Investigations, Senate Government Operations Committee called concerning Senator Charles Percy's (R., 111.) letter on STATOTHR nd said the Senator has no intention of releasin ,,, l_~ g reference to the letter in the special press conference he is calling tomorrow, u:< that the Senator wants to ponder it over the weekend and also gig the Attorney General on the status of his response. Statler had no problem with our letter ("It's what I would have expected from you") but was non-committal. concerning the Senator's response. I told Statler that the trade-offs in harnessing a foreign intelligence service to the Government-wide war against illicit narcotics traffic involves getting important information but not being able to use all of it in prosecution because of the implication for Intelligence Sources and Methods and ongoing operations. 25X1 25X1 24.
