1. I Called Clark McFadden, General Counsel,
Senate Armed Services Committee, and discussed the possibility of holding
a joint hearing with the Senate Appropriations Committee on the recent press
allegations of CIA involvement in domestic activities. McFadden said he would
ask Chairman Stennis to talk to Chairman McClellan about this. I told
McFadden that Chairman McClellan would like to have the hearing around
15 January 1975.
2. I Nancy Bearg, Senate Armed Services
Committee staff, called and asked if Philip Agee's book has been published 25X1
yet. She also wanted to know if we knew who it was in England that Ed Braswell,
Chief Counsel of the Committee, spoke to at the time of the
flap. After checking with I called her back and said the
Agee book would be published 2 January 1975 in Britain by Penguin publishers.
I told her it was most likely horn Braswell spoke to. Also
in response to her request, I gave her the names and authors of the following
books about CIA which have been published recently: "Politics of Heroin in
Southeast Asia" by McCoy; "Company Man" by Maggio; "Myth and Madness"
by McGarvey; "Undercover" by Hunt; and "Without Cloak or Dagger" by
Copeland. Miss Bearg thanked me for the information.
Jim Kronfeld, Staff Counsel, House Government
Operations Committee Subcommittee on Foreign Operations and Government
Information, called and said Chairman Moorhead would like the Director to
brief the Subcommittee on 21 January re the recent press allegations of CIA
involvement in domestic activities. He stressed this would not be a hearing.
4. Spoke with Susan Cantor, an employee
of tile commerical firm Washington Service Bureau. She was interested
in receiving some maps of the Indochina area. I explaned to her that
the Government Printing Office could provide these to her and gave her
the GPO catalogue numbers. She appreciated

5. Called Chairman Lucien Nedzi, Intelligence
Subcommittee of House Armed Services Committee, and told him of the
concern Chairman Moorhead, House Government Operations Committee
Subcommittee on Foreign Operations and Government Information, had
regarding the Right of Privacy exemption he pushed through for CIA in view
of the recent press stories. I told Nedzi that Jim Kronfeld, of Moorhead's
Subcommittee staff, had called and asked for the Director to brief the Subcom-
mittee on 21 January. I said we didn't want to start briefing all the other
committees before our own Subcommittees. Nedzi said to try to slip the
Moorhead briefing to the following week and tell them that Nedzi has asked
us to hold the week of 20 January open for briefing of his Subcommittee.
The Director's office has been advised to hold this week available for the
Nedzi Subcommittee.
Mr. Nedzi also said he had a call at his home from a :man who identified
himself as
an Agency employee. He gave his :number as
6. Called Clark McFadden, General Counsel,
Senate Armed Services Committee, and filled him in on the scheduling of
briefings on domestic activities and suggested he let Chairman Stennis know
of the Senate Appropriations briefing on 15 January and the Nedzi briefing the
week of 20 January plus the Moorhead request. McFadden said he would pass
this on.
67. Ed Braswell, Chief Counsel, Senate Armed
Services Committee, called and said Chairman Stennis would like the Director
to brief them on 15 and 16 January. He said he had just talked to Stennis and
Stennis said he cannot afford to be last. Stennis is going to call Chairman McClella
of Senate Appropriations to discuss how the hearings will be worked out (I told
Braswell we had a tentative date with Appropriations for the 15th). I asked about
a joint session and Braswell said they have been through that experience. He
thinks Stennis will invite McClellan to sit in, though. He said he thought it would
be hard to have an "investigation" if it was both Subcommittees jointly. He asked
if we thought they should also get Mr. Helms up there. I said I didn't know what
Helms' situation was but they should contact State on this. I asked if Stennis
told Braswell of Stennis' discussion on the subject with Mr. Colby on Monday and
Braswell said he did :not.
I alerted

compartmented security clearances. The necessary security documentation
was completed.
10. Met with Herb Fuchs, Counsel, House

the commission and commission staff.
12. Met with Garner J. Cline, Associate
General Counsel, House Judiciary Committee, and reviewed with him the
question of handling and safekeeping of Agency classified material furnished

13. Called Jim Calloway, Senate Appropriations
Committee staff, and alerted him to Ed Braswell's call and Calloway said
he would call Chairman McClellan in Arkansas to alert him to the call Stennis
is making.
I then called Ed Braswell, Chief Counsel, Senate Armed Services
Committee, and said we may have problems on the afternoon of the 15th of
January. I said I called Calloway and alerted him to Braswell's interest and
said Stennis would probably call McClellan. Calloway said he would call
McClellan to alert him to this. Braswell said fine, he said it looks bad to
have a completely closed hearing but it will have to be partly closed. I said
there will probably be developments between now and then--the President might
be releasing some of the report by then. Braswell asked if Chairman Lucien
Nedzi, Intelligence Subcommittee of House Armed Services Committee, had
a copy of the report to the President. I said no only a few people had access.
Braswell said Stennis has not decided as to whether the briefing will be the
full Committee or the Subcommittee. I said I was sure Senator Symington
would push for a full Committee briefing.
14 Called Jim Kronfeld, Staff Counsel, House
Government Operations Committee Subcommittee on Foreign Operations and
Government Information, and told him that Chairman Nedzi, Intelligence Sub-
committee of House Armed Services, has asked the DCI to block the week of
20 January for him (Nedzi). Kronfeld said okay and that he would ask Chairman
Moorhead to call Nedzi to work something out.
15.1 Jim Calloway, Senate Appropriations Com-
mittee staff, called back and said he talked to Chairman McClellan who said
to go ahead with the 15th of January for our briefing. I told him Braswell, Senate
Armed Services Committee staff, had indicated they would follow Appropriations?
whenever they finish then Armed Services would take over and continue on the
16th. Calloway said he would call Braswell.
Calloway called back later and said he had talked with Braswell who had
no problem. They feel it would be helpful if the two of them could come out next
Wednesday, 8 January, for a briefing on what this is all about so they can
prepare for the briefings. I said fine that by that time they might have the
released report from the President. lioway also asked about Mr. Helms
and he agreed to go to State.
