the Subcommittee on Africa, House Foreign Affairs Committee, who wanted
to schedule a briefing of the Subcommittee, perhaps the first week in
December on "CIA activities in South Africa.. " She said Chairman Charles
Diggs would invite all members of the full Committee to attend the briefing.
I told her I would check and get back in touch.
I called Marian Czarnecki, Staff Director of the full Committee, on
the above and he agreed that Yates must have misspoke herself as the only
briefing Chairman Morgan had approved was a substantive intelligence briefing
of the Africa Subcommittee by CIA.

I also discussed with Slatinshek Chairman Nedzi's questions
concerning Soviet access to the Ellsberg papers prior to the New York Times
release as a matter of information to Slatinshek and the status of the
correspondence with Chairman Jack Brooks (D. , Texas), Subcommittee on
Government Activities, House Government Operations Committee. Slatinshek
agreed that it would be well, even though the "ball" technically is in Bill
Jones', Staff Director for the Subcommittee, corner for us to recontact Jones.
Slatinshek asked that I keep him advised. 25X1

Information, House Committee on Government Operations, who just returned
from a vacation and closed out his earlier request for Agency interest on an
invitation that he had received to travel to Hanoi, I thanked him for his offer
to the Agency but told him we would not request that he undertake such a
trip on our behalf. Cornish noted in passing that in talking to the Bureau
they had deferred completely to CIA as to whether there is any Government
interest in him taking such a trip. See Journal Item #6, 8 October.

12. Met with Nelson Denlinger, on the
staff of Sena or Hubert H. Humphrey (D. , Minn. ), to deliver an Agency
publication entitled "Potential Implicat ions of Trends in World Population,
Food Production and Climate. " I told Denlinger that this study did not
represent an Agency position. I added that this was a highly speculative
analysis of a very controversial subject. I concluded by requesting that
the study be used for the Senator's background information avoiding attribution
to the Agency. Denlinger appreciated receiving the study, seemed to clearly
understand the caveats and promised the Senator's cooperation in abiding
by them.

14. Met with Mary, on the staff of
Representative Peter H. B. Frelinghuysen (R., N. J. ), and provided her
with a package of information about the Agency for use by a constituent who
is writing a paper on intelligence.
15. Called Gene Ainsworth, Special
Assistant to the President for Legislative Affairs, for his assessment of
the prospects of the House passing remedial amendments to the Freedom of
Information Act legislation within 90 days before it becomes effective, assuming
Congress overrides the President's veto. Ainsworth is pessimistic about
such fast action by the Congress but he will contact Representatives William
S. Moorhead and John N. Erlenborn, Subcommittee on Foreign Operations
and Government Information, House Committee on Government Operations,
and will let us know the outcome.
16. Called Greg Rushford, Legislative
Assistant to Representative Clarence D. Long (D. , Md. ), in the interest of
determining if there was any middle ground of assistance we could give him
in connection with his prior request for information on arms politics in
the Persian Gulf. He responded: How has the balance of arms power shifted,
particularly with respect to Iran and Saudi Arabia? When will Iran be self-
sufficient in armament and what do their new aircraft and guided missiles
add to their military capability? What are the political relations among the
countries in the Persian Gulf and how secure are the leaders, e. g. , the Shah
of Iran, King Faisal? What is Iraq's military potential? Has the Agency
participated in any analyses of these problems and are they available? I
reminded Rushford that I could not make any commitments; that we did have
strong guidelines controlling the furnishing of such information but that I
would see -what, if anything, could be done.
