Approved For Release 2006/08/02 : CIA-RDP77M00144RO01100180011-2 Journal -- Office of Legislative Counsel Wednesday - 22 December 1976 0LY CON Page 3 25X1 6. LIAISON I talked wit 25X1 and in General Samuel Wilson's office at DIA, concerning T5x1 charge by Tad Szulc in Penthouse M,izine that U. S. military intelligence agencies were training foreign insurgents in California. I IsatdX1 that they had similar inquiries on this from the press and recently from Bill Miller, Staff Director, Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. They had told the press that these was no truth to the stories, but were making a more thorough check before getting back to Bill Miller. He said, however, that the were .pretty sure there was no substance to the charge. Meanwhile, I Ichecked through his contacts in the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who in turn checked with all four military branches,- and was able to determine through these conversations that the Pentagon was not involved in any such training program. 25X1 7. LEGISLATION Dave Bushong, in Senat6 xl James Pearson's (R. , Kans.) office, called me to ask whether the Agency would like any assistance with le Y'?tin the coming Congress. He said that he would be glad to help us if we had any legislation we would like to see considered. I said that at the present time the Agency was strongly urging consideration of the intelligence sources and methods bill and the two deputies legislation, and I said I would forward copies of each to him. 8. LEGISLATION Called Jack Sapp, Senat,65X1 Rules Committee, to find out the status of and prospects for S. Res. 586, which would restructure the Senate committee system. Mr. Sapp would not speculate as to the resolution's chances for success, but did say Senator Adlai Stevenson (D. , Ill.) is expected to resubmit the resolution on 4 January and that the Rules Committee has scheduled hearings for 5 and 7 January 1977. Finally, Mr. Sapp noted the Rules Committee may be instructed to report back to the Senate on the resolution by 19 January. LIAISON Mike Madigan, Minority25X1 Counsel, Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, called to request an interview with the former Chief of thel tation for the after.nc c til of 30 December 1976. I told Madigan I would see if he was available on that date and let him know. MORUCIDIF Approved For Release 2006/08/02 : CIA-RDP77MOOl 44RO01 100180011-2
