question on the use of PSAS.
By its" Certificate of Incorporation and By-
laws,. the purpose of the .Public Service Aid Society is 4 .
"to render charitable assistance, financial and otherwise, to--
deserving present and .former employees of the Federal Govern-
ment and their widows and dependents, who through no fault of
-their own,,:have become 'impoverished and in urgent need of
charitable, assistance.1'
While an employee, Mr. Hunt sought financial assistance r u .
PSAS and his requests-were reviewed, as all requests are, by
an Executive Committee and approved. Suffice it to say that-
the press reports concerning this financial assistance to Mr.
Hunt were exaggerated both as to the amount-and as to how the
assistance. came about.
I suggest that you report to HAG only that
you have discussed the Hunt PSAS matter with me, and that you
personally are satisfied that the assistance he received was
in accordance with normal procedures used in all PSAS cases,
and-that the press reports concerning this matter are woefully
inaccurate..
