Approved For R&A1 0 60017-6 23 August 1974 STAlrINTL MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD SUBJECT: IBM Case 1. In accordance with comments made by Chief, Physical Security Division prior to his departure for leave, I con- tacted Mr. Seasword, Department of Commerce, to got the latest information from him concerning the individuals from IBM who may have had access to Agency documents. 2. Mr. Seasword advised that four representatives of IBM visited his offices on 16 August and reviewed a number of Agency documents in Seasword's custody. They also re- viewed other classified documents originated by State and DOD. No copies of the documents were provided to the IBM representatives, nor did they make any notes from the docu- ments. They simply compiled a list of the specific documents of which they desire copies. According to Seasword., 'tr. Weintraub, a member of the Department of Commerce General Counsel's Staff, will furnish the Agency General Counsel with a copy of the list and request permission to pass the documents, If permission is granted, two copies of each document will be made; one will be passed to IBM and the other to the Department of Justice. Seasword reiterated his impression that Weintrau7 will first pass the list to the Agency General Counsel's office. Iie stated that he cannot give us a bootleg copy of that list. Seasword further advised that the list may include some documents other than those 16 listed on. the attachment to the 13 August 1974 memorandum signed by John T. Farrell. 3. Seasword stated that the Agency documents concerned appear to be mostly "intelligence type statements" prepared as a result of anal sis of other information and not raw data. He expressed. the of the documents probably came from Approved For Release 20(T/QB1? u ;: a,63 v im.6 tc ri ~`w. tlir BrW, STATOTHR 'vw? 4' i . The four IBM representatives who visited Commerce on 16 August and were given access to Agency documents carried an IBM Visit Authorization Request signed by one W. J. Burke, dated 29 July 1974. Seasword expressed the belief that Burke is probably the Security Officer for IB*. The authorization request identified the four individuals and their clearances as follows: MARDEN, Ralph Crosby STATOTHR Secret Clearance issued 16 April 1968 by DISCO OSBORNE, John William, Jr. - Secret Clearance issued STATOTHR I September 1965 by DISCO HOPKINS, Everett S. - SSN Secret Clearance issued I August STATOTHR 62 by DISCO ROLFE, Ronald Steuart -1 1 STATOTHR Interim Secret Clearance issued 1 November 1973 by DOJ (presumably Department of Justice) S. Finally, Mr. Seasword indicated that he still has all of the Agency documents under his control, but would like very much to be rid of them. 6. On this date, I briefed both DDI STATOTHR Security. Officer, and of the General Cou8TATOTHR sel's office on the inormatioin contained herein. STATOTHR Acting Chief, Physical Secur Approved For Release 2002/08/08: / RDP7 ",1Q924190 y Division 6~~1 8
