CONFIDENTIAL
Chief, Mediterranean Bureau

Post Office Box 1
Kyrenia, Cyprus
we have been advised by Mr. Harmon, International broadcasting
Division Engineer, State Department, that a letter has been received
by the Department from Fill Porter, your Consul, which should be of
interest and possibly concern to our organisation. I have not seen
this letter but understand that it pertains to a religious organisa-
tion requesting permission to set up a missionary broadcasting station
on Cyprus.
I am sure that you arm well aware that we desire no transmitters
on Cyprus that might oonoeivably interfere wen to the slightest
extent with our operation. Possibly you have not been aware that we
objected very strenuously to the State Department putting a transmitter
on Cyprus. Whether this influenced the British in their denial of
State Department's request for establishment of triis tranemitte? I
do not know. A secret report ?lo. 40 from the American Consulate,
subjects The Bear East" Radio Stations Some Observations on British
Broadcasts in the Arabic Language from Limassol, Cyprus, indicates
co..clusively that Bill Porter certainly isn't sonars of the fact that
we objected to this station be;nr; located on Cyprus.
I suggest that you oontaot Porter discreetly about this missionary
broadcasting station and sake his aware of the fact that we certainly
do not desire any installation on Cyprus wnioh would interfere to any
extent whatever with our monitoring. Conceivably Mr. Porter might not
appreciate the fact that we interfered with the State Department idea,
hence I can see no useful purpose to be served by having him become
aware of this.
LKWshmq
Sincerely,
940
