1. The fol.lo~ring information was furnished the andersigned
by Lt. Colonel George Beeler arxi Lt. Colonel George Jones oS'
the Advance Study Group, Departukent of the AraZy, on 2 Larch 1849,
as of possible interest to CIA with a request that it be furnished
the sF~ecific office in CIA which r::i.ght have a prirsary interest
therein:
a. During the :veek ending 25 February 19k9 the
Advance Study Group visited the Russian Institute of
Columbia University whicYi i s directed by a D r.
Robinson. Luring the course of their discussions
with this group Professor Ernest J. Simmons expressed
his opinion that the governcrient was not properly
exploiting all of the possibilities of getting in-
formation out of the Soviet Union in that of an
estimated 40,000 titled publications annually our
government received only 7,000, and further that
personnel engaged ~vith the collection of such in-
formation should necessarily study the Soviet dress
in order to intelligently direct their effort.
Professor Simons reco~cursnded "Current Digest of the
Soviet Press," ~ehich is a weekly publication sponsored
by the Joint Committee on soviet Studies and which is
published by The American Council of Learned societies,
