Receipt of your 25 February 1949 letter reporting Your interesting
encperien ce with one is acknowl dged.
Although most interesting and sof t aaateinst, your letter causes
no concern in that I am not so sure that we stand on ground as tits
as you have concluded. The rawif`icatioras of the laws of the various
countries concerning defy etion, libel, slander, etc., are anctaasive
mid this, together 4th copyright, unfair caaa~etition, etc., has been
the subject of considerable discussion between ourselves and the BBC.
The problem is now being studied by our legal staff as well as th,.t
of the BBC in an attempt to work, out sore procedure that will insure
maximma protection to us both.
I have not the slightest idea what the laws of have to say
in this connection. Generally speak4 g,however, the taunt that &
statarm t is broadcast in Clear text for the world to hear if it
cares to listen does not autce*tically now that we could not be sued
for the further publication and dissemination of such a stetes-ent.
It appears that you have handled very well indeed and
it is to be hoped that the incident is . However, we have had
so VAny unfortunate encounters with tt ~that I do not
want to take any chances, however s1t jj, of having Wuer trouble
this aloe* to the end of our stay there. I am referring your letter
to the General Counsel to ascertain just where we would stand in such
a case.
