Frost Service mad, BBC ?h nitori Cave rsham Park 'Wading, England Dear Naloolms I am grateful for your letter of 22 December 1948 and would oohing like to reply separately to that paragraph referring to the of checks by our personnel. 1 was aware of the fact that the BBC provided facilities Cavershsa for our staff to cash checks. Howwer, I This not snare serrce or the fact that this privilege had evep been abused is obviously a very great oonvenionoe to our London aro" employees. which you are, of course, under no obligation to provide. Believe we, it is genuinely appreoiated. I regret very mooh that it is legally and administratively impossible for this agency or the U.S. Government to indemnify against possible loss due to cashing of personal oheoks. The pay- ment of non-American employees of our Bureau in sterling checks has are, of probably increased the volume of business somewhat. These aressibre lose course, backed by the U.B. Government, and insofar as po is concerned I believe there is no risk. Coning of personal checks is another thing. I have written Oasking him to try to reach an agreement with the employees of the London Bureau wherein as a group, on a pro rata or other suitable basis, they agree to indemnify BBC against loss due of personal checks. As a wetter of caution, I should_ to Dashing think it extremely advisable that some limit be placed both within the amount and number of checks which one employes might m gcash locally out ally given period* r is hope be continued undue bur#en and without so that this this service may undue risk on your part. You :nay rest assured that wrile it is impossible for me to officially indsaanity the BBC, I will use all the power with which I act vested to secure reimbursement prompt11,should you incur any loss.
