Time and Place of Meeting: on 15 August 1955, from 1100 to 1500- 2. Attendance: ? 3. Purpose: To discuss the development of a telescoping barrel for a long focal length lens. 25X1 25X1 25X1 4. Discussion: a. A copy of the specifications attached to the above referenced memorandum was sent to on about 25X1 13 July 1955. Discussions with personnel of on 25X1 15 August 1955 revealed that they have determined that a satisfactory 48" lens was not readily available. The two lenses which were found to be optically suitable for the project in question were the 40" Astro, f-6.3 and the 35" Zeiss Apo-Tessar, f-9.0 which have the following approximate dimensions: Astro Zeiss Apo-Tessar Focal Length 40" 35" f - Number 6.3 9.0 Weight 3-6#(estimated) 12# Diameter 6-1/4" 7-1/4" Cost $800 $875 Resolution (lines/mm, wide open) 85 200 NOTE: The dimensions on the Astro are according to manufacturer specifications and the Zeiss dimensions are as measured. b. Zeiss makes an I - " o Tessar lens of unknown dimensions and currently s attempting to secure 25X1 one of these lenses. These lenses have a nominal sale price of $1,650, but will not be available for the 15 November deadline for this project/ c. (1) Two additional 40" Astros. (2) One additional 40" Astro and one Zeiss 35" Apo Tessar. (3) Two 35" Zeiss Apo Tessars. (4) One 4O" Astro or one Zeiss 35" Apo Tessar and one 48" Zeiss Apo Tessar (provided a 48" Zeiss Apo-Tessar is obtainable and optically suitable). d. It is estimated that the lens barrel (without lens) will have an approximate weight of 5-10# (estimated). The housing will be black anodized and then covered with a flat black baked finish to achieve a non-reflective black exterior. e. The barrel is being designed to adapt to either an Exacta with a bayonet mount or to a Leica with a reflex housing. It is requested that be supplied with a Leica with reflex housing and 25X1 an Exacta with bayonet mount to facilitate their design of the barrel. f. In the future, the lens testing will be carried out according to a standard procedure, the details ofs;which will be reported to APD. The results will be forwarded by APD to be filed for any future work with long lenses.
