a. A copy of the specifications attached to the above
referenced memorandum was sent to on about 25X1
13 July 1955. Discussions with personnel of on 25X1
15 August 1955 revealed that they have determined that a satisfactory

found to be optically suitable for the project in question were the
40" Astro, f-6.3 and the 35" Zeiss Apo-Tessar, f-9.0 which have
the following approximate dimensions:
Astro Zeiss Apo-Tessar

It was decided, pending discussion with TSS/TA/PD,
that) would secure one of the Astro lenses for
testing and incorporation in_a collapsing lens barrel with the
provision that one of the following alternatives would be selected
to fill the requirement for the other two barrels.
(1) Two additional 40" Astros.
(2) One additional 40" Astro and one Zeiss 35"
Apo Tessar.
(3) Two 35" Zeiss Apo Tessars.
(4) One 4O" Astro or one Zeiss 35" Apo Tessar and one
48" Zeiss Apo Tessar (provided a 48" Zeiss Apo-Tessar is
obtainable and optically suitable).
d. It is estimated that the lens barrel (without lens) will
have an approximate weight of 5-10# (estimated). The housing will be
black anodized and then covered with a flat black baked finish to
achieve a non-reflective black exterior.
e. The barrel is being designed to adapt to either an Exacta
with a bayonet mount or to a Leica with a reflex housing. It is requested
that be supplied with a Leica with reflex housing and 25X1
an Exacta with bayonet mount to facilitate their design of the barrel.
f. In the future, the lens testing will be carried out
according to a standard procedure, the details ofs;which will be
reported to APD. The results will be forwarded by APD to be filed
for any future work with long lenses.
