SUBJECT:
Visits to Press
Wireless Demonstration and National Association of
Purchasing Agents
Exhibit in the Hotel Mayflower, 15 October 1954.
1. On 15 October
1954, the writer, accompanied by
STAT
visited a demonstration of the Press Wireless Model C Radio Receiver in
the lay Adams Rotel. After the Press Wireless demonstration, a visit was
made to the exhibit of the National Association of Purchasing Agents in
the Rotel Mayflower. Visitors were not identified as members of CIA.
2. The Press Wireless Model C Radio Receiver, as explained in the
attached folder, is primarily intended for reception of carrier-shift
radiophoto signals. During the demonstration, the equipment was driving
a standard teleprinter with test signals from New York. Earlier, the
equipment had received photographs from New York on standard Press Wire-
less Wirephoto equipment, using direct positive process, 100 scan lines
per minutes with 138 line resolution. The receiver appears to be well
designed for both commercial and military service, specifically due to
the elimination of a number of "operator difficulties" by reducing to a
minimum the number of necessary controls. Applicability of the receiver
in a secure facsimile network will be discussed with engineers of the
National Security Agency. Cost of the receiver and converter is $1,200.00.
3. Only a few items at the National Association of Purchasing Agents
were considered of interest to Communications. Facsimile terminal equip-
ment, marketed by Air Associates, Inc., is described in the attached folder.
The equipment is the result of further development on a standard facsimile
transceiver designed and developed by the now defunct Finch Telecommunica-
tions Company, Passaic, New Jersey. Magnetic tape recorders designed and
developed by the Davies Laboratories, Riverdale, Md., were of interest.
They are described briefly in an attached sheet. A photographic reproduc-
tion process developed by the Anken Film Company, Newton, N.J., is of in-
direct interest and is further described in an attached folder.
4. With reference to the facsimile equipment mentioned above, the
equipment appears to be a fair facsimile transceiver with many of the head-
aches removed which were prevalent in the old Finch equipment. Automatic
features have given way to manual operation in the interest of workability.

The equipment includes no provision for security. Radiation potential has
been reduced through the use of wet paper and by burying the printer blade
arrangement well in the center of the cabinet. There is approximately one
minute between the time the recorder starts and when the copy appears.
