SUBJECT; Proposed Scrambling Device for Intellofax
Facsimile Equipment
REFERENCE:
Memorandum from to Chief, Engi-
neering Division, Office of Communications,
dated 8 December 1951, subject as above.
1. The Intellofax System in OCD is now carrying a heavy
workload for all Offices of CIA, and for the IAC agencies.
2. The System would be vastly more useful f it were
possible to install receivers (of Which we have ten on hand)
in buildings Where the other Offices and the IAC agencies are
located. This would enable u$ to transmit intellofax tapes
direct by wire from M-Building to the customers* Such trans-
mission of classified material cannot be undertaken, however,
until a scrambler or other device is available to preserve
the security of the transmitted data.
3. of your Office, has thoroughly investi-
gated the problem, and I concur with his opinion that it is
appropriate for OCD to request the cooperation of your Office
in drawing up a program for the development of such a device.
This cooperation is accordingly requested.
4. I'd like to take this opportunity to express to you
