At li.00 hours on 28 March 1957, a meeting was held in the office of for the purpose of reviewing the status 50X1 of automatic eying systems under study by the Research and Develop- ment Branch. This meeting was held in accordance with the instruc- tions of the Research, Development and Production Review Board, Meeting No. were: 65 of 6 February 1957. Those present at the conference CC-E 50X1 CC-E 0C-08(T 0C-0&T 00-E 2. The discussion was opened with a review of the characteris- tics desired in the ideal automatic keying system. These charac- teristics include the capability of fast message preparation, small size, minimum power or no power requirement, capability of storage and a reuseable storage technique, character forming operation rather than dot-space-dash type of operation, and the utmost of simplicity with the highest possible degree of reliability. 3. continued the discussion by reading a series of notes concerning each of the keying techniques pres- ently being investigated by the Research and Development Branch,, with recommendations as to the future status of each project. a. The (PM) - It was recommended that the be evaluated and when a reliable instrument is pro- vided that a small quantity be stocked for interim use. b. ET-2 - It was recommended that the study presently being conducted for the purpose of increasing reli- ability and decreasing production cost of the ET-2 be continued. If this item is proven to be a re- liable unit capable of being economicany produced, a small quantity should be stocked. c. Telephone Dial Keyer - It was recommended that this project be canceled. The HODBO Keyer - It was recommended that this project be canceled. g. The RS-13 - It was recommended that following the de- livery of 40 RS-13B units, this project be suspended pending the outcome of the AS-3 development. h. RS-16 - It was recommended that this project be con- tinued to the completion of the present prototype units. i. RS-18 - It was recommended that the development of this system be continued with high priority. j. AS-3 - It was recommended that the development of this system be continued with high priority. k. STASH - It was recommended that this project be canceled. 1. UNION Keyer - It was recommended that further activity on this project be canceled. 4.
