A
1. On 25 June 1958, a visit was made to the
DATE: 27 June 1958
Company with to discuss plans to correct the troubles
in the . The following persons were contacted:
25X1
25X1
2. The company representatives were advised that this Agency cannot
accept the printer in its present condition. The printer does not meet
the specifications set forth in the contract. In addition, several troubles
have been found in this prototype model. With regard to specifications,
the printer will not produce page copy with varied spacing between lines.
All copy received is printed out with single spacing. Also, the four
instruction books called for in the contract have not been delivered.
Troubles that have been found include:
a. The failure of the buffer tape transport to record or
playback on the 903 reader or incoming information
b. A burned out servo drive motor in the 903 reader cabinet
c. Several 0191 diodes which have failed
d. The ink ribbon transport which frays and wears the ribbon
in a short time
3. The ~representatives were anxious to rectify the conditions
that exist in order to collect the final 20% of contractual funds. They
are also concerned with the success of the printer since it is the first
prototype delivered. Two technical specialists are to come to Washington
on the 2nd and 3rd of July to work on the Printer. In addition to the
major corrections, a new type ink ribbon which will not fray will be put
on the printer. Larger blowers will be installed in the reader cabinet
to prevent further diode breakdown. In order to correct the format
problem of single, double, and triple spacing, the Line Feed electronic
circuits will be reworked. Also, it will be necessary to change the
incoming message format. The buffer storage runs too fast with our
original format signals. It is not possible, for example, to use just
CRLFLF for double spacing. Five to six spaces will have to be inserted

before putting in the Line 3ed s . al's i'or 'e ieh line space. This will
permit the buffer to work smoothly and line space properly. The printer
itself will be modified slightly so that with the format tape of the
printer, it will be possible to have all single spacing, all double.,or
all triple spacing. This is not possible now.
4. is to advise us shortly whether the printer will
work on 50 cycles per second or not, and what will be required to enable
the printer to work at this frequency. The instruction manuals are
being printed now and will be delivered soon.
