1. Concurrent with the receipt of the functional characteristics
of a miniature data recorder under Ref B, our requirements have been
reviewed with the following conclusions. Primarily, since over five
months have been required for the preparation of these functional
characteristics which were outlined in our original request under Ref A
ani evidently additional time will be required to prepare the develop-
mental specifications, we have reached a point in time where urgency of
operations demands that further delays in starting this development must
be kept to a minimum. In this respect. our experience with the capa-
bilities and performance of the which is closely asso- 25X1

numerous contractors with which we have had little success in the past.
2. Review or the functional Characteristics as set forth in Ref B
reveals that certain characteristics outlined in Ref A have been omitted
and others require more definition. These requirements, which we feel
are requisites for compatibility with existing equipments and operational
employment are itemized below:
a. Track widths and spacing in accordance with Para 2
of attachment to Ref A.
b. Supply and take spool size as stated in Para 3 of
attachment to Ref A.
c. Record speed to be standard as requested in Para 3
of attachment to Ref A.
d. Electronics to be transistorized and consist of only
sufficient amplification to meet sensitivity requirements.
e. Sensitivity to be clarified to read 100 millivolts
EMS at an input inpedance of 1000 ohms.

f. Connectors to include remoting facilities.

Specification to eliminate oscillation of reels or
tape spillage When in recorder "OFF" condition (i.e.,
mechanical capstan, reel or motor brake).
h. Construction to be more explicit on shock requirement
(Rather than moderate drop? a realistic shock specifi-
cation should be utilized) i.e., survival and operating.
3. It is requested that the above specifications be included in
the functional characteristics required. It is sbecifically requested
that this requirement be placed on the either 25X1
as an extension to the existing contract or a new contract. Fiease make
every effort to avoid further delays.
