THE MID-CAREER COURSE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS
sponsored by
THE FOREIGN SERVICE INSTITUTE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Dates : 9 and 10 September 1958
Time : 0915 to 1630
Place : 117 Central Building
Classification: Top Secret
Objective and Scope of Course
The Mid-Career Course on Foreign Affairs is designed to
offer to Foreign Service Officers of Classes L. and 5 an opportunity
to take a 12 week break from the immediate focus of day-to-day
operations, during which they may gain perspective for a mid-
career reassessment of the functions of the Foreign Service
and of their own roles in the Service in the formulation and
implementation of United States foreign policy.
The methods used in the Course to accomplish this objective
include lectures and discussion periods with outstanding men
from the academic field and Government. For example, the Honorable
Robert Cutler has lectured on the "Role of Presidential Advisory
Groups in US Foreign Policy Formulation." The JCS put on a
two-day briefing consisting of an "Analysis of Current US Military
Capabilities."
Composition of Class
The class is composed of 18 FSOts as well as one representative
each from the Department of the Army, ICA, and CIA.
