The writer visited the STAT Santa Minim, Cal., in connection with the development of the smell portable 23 watt engine driven's:mar unit which is being considered by. the Army Air Forces, Watson Laboratories, and by Ikons and Coles Signal Laboratories for special being developed 25X1 Los Angelez, Cal., is described 25X1 as follow a. The engine is a very small 2 stroke semi.diesel unit with 1120 bore and 3/2n stroke and .098 cubic inch displaeement, operating at a speed of 8000 rpm. Ignitiso is obtained by using a hot wire platinua plug. The small platinum wire coil is used instead of the conventioaal spark plug electrodes,. Clothe bench mounted experimenWal unit a 3 volt dry cell was used to heat the platinum wire for starting. Aftwr the engine started no further use of the battery was required. On, the developmental model electidcal energy will be taken from the generator during hand-cranking operation to heat the platinum hot wire plug for starting. This circuit is automatically disommected fro* the generator after the engine starts, and the heat of eospreesion plus the catylitic astivity of the fuel on the platinum wire is all that is required for ignition and continued operation. b. A special fuel composed of Metro Methane, Methanol, Mesitile aside and other compounds *reused. Information as to what the other compounds are was not available, nor the proportions of the stature. This was held as a trade secret. c. A special synthetic lubricant was being ueel. Upon 133, pro- duoed by Union Carbide Company. This lubricant is not available commercially, however, it can be obtained for experimental use only from the Union Carbide Compaey. d. The special carburetor was designed and developed for the engine by the ming unitised control. Th* unit started very easily and performed well. experimenta3STAT e. The generator being used is a small two pole permanent magnet generator being manufactured by the Indianan Steel Products Co. STAT ; also the are not too wall pleased with , s TAT the de7sign. Nacerpt fraa Power Nemo. 0134, cid 13 June 49 (can't) f* Anew development model is being made at the present time which they expect to have sompleted in approximately 43 days. It will be approximately A.4/2111x 44,120:n60, a oompletely encased unit, incorporating the oneplete 25X1 power unit. A two position folding hand crank, and gear train, are also incorporated in the mit. The hamdcramk has two positions, one for cranking the =gime thra a centrifugal elethbo and in the other position the crank can be used to drive the geasrator thruagear train, thus enabling the unit to be used as a hand creaked generator in case the engine fails, or in case the Seal supply is =hooted. The estimated weight of this unit will be between 3 and 4, pounds. g. The new unit being developel will have an engine speed of 1000 rpm., and is being mode for long it. operation* It is being developed for the Navy laectronice laboratories, biz requested 5000 hours coubinuoue automatic unattended operation at 10 matte constant output. The development company doubts that such life can be obtained, however, they expect the unit will give at least 2C00 hour. of oontineoes operation* The application of the unit is for unattubdid weather stations for Navy Nleotr.mics laboratories. Meat of the engine parts were completed. A sleeved cylinder was being used, made of Neehanite and the piston was made of the same emteriel* No piste= flap are used on the piston as they are workingtovery close tolerances* The Technical Development Co. comtenplates using epithetic sapphire for tbe pistons of these small engines to increase the operating life at the engine providing the prop - sant material now being used proves unsatisfactory for long it. operation* The connecting rod is 'Meat forged 75 3? dural. h* The connecting rod bearing will be a ball bearing using conical *biped ball rail in the bearing which will give a 4 point bail contact on the rod and crankpin. The engine is a precision built unit from start to finish, and the workmamihip is of the hiahest quality. The Technical Development Cb, is staffed with 140 quilt, engineers. Their egaipment is excellent. The WOrbilla are highly trained, precision individuals. itverything produced in checked with precision gauges and instruments with which the company is well equipped. Thalami, development model, when completed, will be brought to these laboratoriee for a demonstration* ;AMAX, rower branch, 3$L COPY STAT Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2012/08/16: CIA-RDP78-03535A000500020041-8
