Although it is not listed as a separate unit in the T/O, that part of the Field Operations Staff, FDID which excludes the Operations Officer GS-13 and Clerk-Steno;r_rapher GS-5 is by function and by custom called the "Broadcast Information Section". The principal mission of this section is to supply various afencies of the government with cur- rent and significant information on foreign radio transmitters. Agencies served by the section include: CIA, FCC, Department of State, Bureau of Standards, Department of the?Interior, and Department of De- fense. In addition certain unclassified portions of this service are furnished public-spirited commercial enterprises. The Broadcast Information Section is unique in that it is the only unit in the government compiling and maintaining complete information on foreign broadcasting stations. 2. Since the establishment of the T/0 of this section in 1947 the volume and importance of its v.ork has increased to a point where it can no longer-adequately perform its mission. This increased work load is clearly apparent when it is realized that between 19t7 and 1951: 3. The increased importance of the work of the Broadcast Informa- tion Section to National Intelligence is evident in the general increase in importance attached to radio as a weapon of propaganda and psycholog_?i- cal warfare. 14. In order to permit this section to properly perform its assigned mission, the follovuin`: additional positions are believed necessary and it is requested that the F3ID T/O be amended accordingly without delay.
