SUBJECT:~Report of Pro~resa on the "Clam Project" as Determined
Dur'3'~'g..a~'li,p to t~C~on MarM~'"5; 6,..7, 1957?
1. Several infection molded bodies for the clam had been received
from the molder and, in general, the unit appears very satisfactory.
The insert which forms the channel for the primer flame worked out very
hell and the "snap-in" fingers for both the detonators and the penoils
produce an appropriate amount of tension.
2. There are a few points which seed correction, however, and will
require some alteration of the mold. The holes which receive the snout
of the pencil will have to be enlarged and the edges of the bottom eov+er
seal will have to be strengthened. Another important point concerns the
radii at the edges of the box. The radii called for on the drawing were
not included on the mold. Since a mayor alteration will be necessary to
correct the radii, 0 will ask the molder to produce several hundred
units for test purposes before undertaking the alteration.
3. The stainless steel magnet holder and spring have :not been
received and are not expected for several weeks.
4. Unfortunately,0 had not prepared a test program as requested,
25X1
but we did discuss, in general terms, what tests should be included.
They will send down a program based on onlt discussion in the next week
or so.
5. Under the present contract, U will assemble 1,000 clams,
25X1
complete with magnets and it is expected that a large percentage of
these will be expended in test. The remaining units will be offered as
samples to the various "users", and if they are well received ire will
recoamiend to Logistics that procure a suitable number for stock.
