MEMORANDUM FOR: Chief, Technical Services Staff
Liquid Oxygen
several months agog of my Staff approached
of your Staff on the subject of determining the effect of an
incendiary bullet fired into the liquid oxygen tank of a liquid fueled
rocket or missile. L -1 has since informed him that he was
operating under a schedule drawn up by of your Staff and
that the experiment should be included in that schedule.
2. For purposes of the experiment, the container in which the
liquid oxygen is placed should approximate the material of which mis-
sile oxider tanks are constructed and need have a capacity of no more
than five gallons. A . 30 caliber incendiary round should be used to
determine the effect produced by a hit. It is believed that the liquid
oxygen may be obtained from the Engineer Center, Fort Belvoir, Va.
3. It is requested that arrangements for the experiment be
made by the appropriate division of your Staff and that I be informed
of the time, date, and place selected. Representatives of this Staff,
OTR, and several Area Divisions have indicated a desire to attend.
