On 6 May, accompanied bj 25X1 of the Stanford Research Institute. The purpose of 25X1 the visit was to determine whether or no was in a position 25X1 to undertake work rtaining to the location of underground atomic blasts. stated that he knew of no seismographic means 25X1 of locating an underground explosion after the explosion had occurred. He stated that there appeared to be more possibility in determining that a blast had occurred immediately following such a blast. He mentioned that air and earth sound waves could be picked up at distances of several hundred miles. He further stated that because of present high priority work he was unable to undertake any additional contracts, suggested too that he organize a panel or group 25X1 of competent geophycisists and hope that they could suggest and de- velop means for determining the location of underground atomic explo- sions. 2. Although results of this trip were negative, felt that it was worthwhile and assured me that if he saw where TSS/SD could be of further assistance to his in this problem or other related problems he would contact us.
