1. The U. S. Army Intelligence Board Digest Number 7 is attached.
2. Data included has been obtained from analysis of manufacturerst
literature, demonstration of some items, and limited experimentation with
others; formal test and evaluation of this equipment has not been conducted
by the USAINTB, this headquarters.
3. The Supply Agency (SupAgency), this headquarters, will supply upon
request, the items of nonstandard supplies and equipment listed. Items re-
quested by field intelligence units require the written approval of the
ACofS, G2, of the major command to which the unit is assigned or attached,
in addition to the necessary funds. Intelligence funds will be transported
to the Commanding General, this headquarters, ATTN: SupAgency, by means of
a properly executed Obligation Authority (DA Form 14-114) in duplicate.
4. Delivery dates included indicate the suppliers' ability to ship
items after receipt of an order; the time necessary for processing orders
is not included.
5. Requests for additional information concerning items mentioned, or
suggestions concerning equipment considered desirable for inclusion in sub-
sequent issues of this series of digests are encouraged. Correspondence

NUMBER 7 EQUIPMENT FOR INTELLIGENCE APPLICATION (U)
SECTION I - PURPOSE (U)
1. The items described in this digest are presented in accordance
with paragraph 2a, AR 15-15, solely for their possible application to the
intelligence field. Mention of a commercial product does not constitute
an endorsement of the product by this headquarters.
SECTION II - PHYSICAL SECURITY ITEMS (U)
2. (C) Safemaster Number 60 Pinchproof Deadlock Bonnet
a. (U) Description: This item and all accessory parts are made
of cast aluminum, finished in hammertone gray. The bonnet measures 12 X
3 X 5 inches and houses a Sargent and Greenleaf Model T combination lock
with Underwriters Group 1 label; a serial number is stamped on the bonnet.
Accessory items include an anchor base and strike plate for installing on
a door and doorjamb respectively, and a back plate to protect the lock when
the bonnet and lock are stored. When the bonnet is installed on a door,
the extended lock bolt prevents the door from opening; a part of the
bonnet extends around the strike plate to prevent pinching or spread-
jacking techniques.
b. Intelligence Application: This item may be used to secure
areas such as CF supplies storage, file rooms, radio rooms etc, in field
units in lieu of a common hasp and combination padlock.
C, Appraisal: This device provides an increased time delay
of only 1 or 2 minutes against surreptitious entry as compared to the
.normal combination padlock. The combination to the lock can be obtained
by. drilling the bonnet and lock: by forcibly removing the bonnet and lock
and replacing with substitute items: and by forcing the back plate when
the lock is stored, and replacing with a substitute back plate or sub-
stitute lock,
d. (U) Procurement: This device is manufactured by the
Safemasters Company, 1210 23rd Street, NW, Wash:irigton 7, D.C., with
prices as follows:

3. (C) Interectics Bonding Agents, Interact "S" and Interact "E"
a. (U) Description: Interact "S" in metallic rod form, and
Interact "E", in powder form, are bonding agents for use in joining non-
ferrous metals. Materials to be fused must be preheated to approximately
800 degrees fahrenheit: heat should not be directed against either of
these materials themselves. After heating items to be fused, the bonding
agents are placed on the surface to be joined, and melt from the heat of
the materials to form a sturdy bondo
b. Intelligence Application: Type "S" and "E" may be used for
fabricating special tools and jigs for use in surreptitious entry, and
repairing radio equipment,
co (U) Appraisal: The resulting bond is at least as strong
as a weld, and appears to be as strong as the original piece of metal.
Both of these items are hygroscopic and must be sealed when stored.
Ventilation is required when using these chemicals as the reaction from
the heat creates heavy, white fumes which are toxic,
d. (U) Procurement: These items are manufactured by Interectics,
Inc' Northfield and Forbes Roads, Bedford, Ohio and are also available
from the D & H Distributing Company, Inc, Baltimore, Maryland. Price of
type "S" is $7.29 per pound; type "E" is $6.69 per pound.
SECTION III - Electronic Items (U)
4. (C) Motorola "Handy-Talkie" Pocket Receiver
a. (U) Description: This item is a fully transistorized,,
FM, pocket size communication receiver compatible with any FM two-way
radio system, for individualized voice communication. It measures 5 3/4
$ 2 1/8 X 1 1/8 inches and weighs ~. ounces, complete with batteries which
fit in a separate compartment within the case. The receiver contains 17
transistors and 5 diode circuits to provide "big set" sensitivity with low
power drain. The unit is crystal controlled, single frequency operation
with a sensitivity of .5 microvolt in the 25-514 megacycle band, and 1.0
microvolt in the 1144-74 megacycle band, Battery life of mercury cells is

approximately 200 hours; with rechargable nickel cadmium battery approximately
20 hours per recharge. Audio output is thru either earphones or a small
loudspeaker*
b. Intelligence Application: This item, when used with a voice-
modulated, FM transmitter, similar to the Fargo 601 Intelligence Trans-
mitter (see paragraph 5, Digest Number 5, 22 May 1958), will provide a
communications system to aid in conducting surveillances,, coordinating
stake-outs, etc.
e. (U) Appraisal: This item is rugged and reliable. The
sensitivity, selectivity, frequency stability, and channel spacing are
comparable to larger, mobile type equipment. A squelch control eliminates
the usual background noise when no signal is being received. It can be
carried on the person in a discreet manner*
d. (U) Procurement: This item is manufactured by Motorola
Communications and Electronics, Inc, 1.501 West Augusta Blvd, Chicago Si,
Ill and sells for approximately $340.00.
5. (C) Minitape Miniature Recorder, Model 8
a. (U) Description: This item is a completely transistorized
portable tape recorder with self contained batteries, which measure
9 X 12 X 5 inches and weighs 13 pounds, complete with battery supply.
A 12.5 volt nickel cadmium battery supplies power for both -its transistor
amplifier and motor drive mechanism. The unit is available in 3 speeds,
1 7/8, 3 3/4, and 7 z Inches per second. No volume indicator is required
as the transistor amplifier provides automatic control over a 40 db range.
A playback head is included which allows headphone monitoring. Accessory
items are available for remote control operation and for battery recharging
from various line input voltages,
b. Intelligence Application: This item can be carried in a
brief case to provide covert operation and will work well from an auto-
mobile powered from the 12 volt vehicle system with accessory cable. The
low impedance microphone input is ideal for long microphone lead runs.
e. (U) Appraisal: This item is of professional caliber, easy
to operate and rugged. The playback head allows constant tape monitoring;
the automatic record level compensates for various input voltages which
may be encountered*

Hoffman Corporation, 921 North Highland Avenue, Hollywood 38, California;
price, $494.00.

SECTION IV - Photographic Items (U)
6. (U) Kodak. Plus-X Film, Improved Type
a. Description: This film is a new version of 35-mm Plus-X,
a general purpose black and white film widely used in intelligence photo-
graphy. It may be identified by a wide, black arrow on the package
which bears the legend, "See Instructions, Improved Type Plus-X". With
the same ASA rating as the previous Plus-X, the "Improved Type" can also
be exposed and developed in the same formulas. This film, which appears
to fall between a medium speed and a thin emulsion film as regards image
sharpness, developes much more rapidly than its predecessor. Processing
in D-76 for 5 to 6i minutes or for 7 to 8 minutes in D-76 diluted 1:1
is recommended.
b. Intelligence Application: This film will provide increased
information obtainable from intelligence photography. Its excellent
acutance and reasonably fine grain produces superior negative and print
quality with sharper detail than obtained with the previous Plus-X film.
C* Appraisal: When properly exposed and processed, Improved
Type Plus-X film provides extremely high quality results. An exposure
index of at least two times the manufacturerb rating of ASA 80 for sub-
jects of normal contrast, and still higher numbers for low contrast
subjects will result in negatives of low graininess and excellent gradation
and sharpness. Although listed on the manufacturexrs data sheet, the use
of Microdol as a developer is not recommended as it decreases image sharp-
ness*
d. Procurement: This film is manufactured by Eastman Kodak
Company, Rochester, New York, and is now available in most camera shops.
The price for 36 exposure rolls is $1.10; on GSA Federal Schedule, Number
GSA - 005 - 171186 - Item 19 - 3, the price is $.63. This GSA number is
for Plus-X film and requests should indicate, "Improved Type".
7. (U) Polaroid 4 X 5 Film Holder and Sheet Film
a. Description: This item is a new Polaroid Land Film holder
which slides into the spring back of standard press and view cameras to
accept individual sheets of the new Polaroid film; previously, a large
and heavy roll film holder which utilized standard land roll film was the
only accessory for the 4 X 5 format. The new Polaroid sheet films are
packaged in individual light-tight paper sheathes which obviate the need
for the conventional dark slide. These sheathes protect the film before
use and during the standard 60-second processing. The film holder con-
tains the usual pod-busting processing rollers. The individual film
packet is pushed into the holder and the envelope withdrawn, leaving the
film exposed in the picture taking position. During the exposure this

envelope hangs off to the side similar to uncut film-pack papers. After
exposure the envelope is slid back into the holder, a lever which places
tension on the processing rollers flipped over, the entire film packet
pulled from the holder, and the 60-second cycle occurs inside the packet.
When completed, the negative and print are pulled from the packet and sep.
arated in the same way as the standard Polaroid print. The new film hold-
er also allows the removal of an exposed film packet without immediate.
processing. Two new films, Types 52 and 53, both with exposure indexes
of 200 daylight and 160 tungsten are available in the packet form; Type
52 has a :paper negative like the Polaroid roll films, while Type-53 has an
acetate base. This acetate base negative can be preserved by additional
darkroom processing if initial development is delayed until a darkroom
is available.
b. Intelligence Application: This 4 X 5 film holder allows
more rapid shooting than with the standard Polaroid camera or roll film
adapter. The provision for removing an exposed film packet without
processing allows the photographer to immediatly reload, continue shooting
and process 'the packets at any convenient time. The capability of preserving
the acetate base negative permits the easy reproduction of additional
prints as may be required.
c. Appraisal: Both Type 52 and 53 films have excellent
quality characteristics with very good resolution and tonal quality, and
use of the 4 X 5 holder and film packets is extremely simple. The film
holder-film packet combination, with its capability of producing a full
4 X 5 print for immediate viewing adds a new and useful item to the
Polaroid system of photography,
d. Procurement: The Polaroid Land Film Holder Nr 500 and
its companion film packets are manufactured by Polaroid Corporation,,
730 Main Street, Cambridge 39, Mass. They are expected to be on the market
in late 1959 as a regular stock item. Prices are estimated as follows:
Nr 500 Film Holder, $50.00; Type 52 Film Packet, $6.25 per dozen; Type
53 Film Packet $7.25 per dozen.
