1. person.-el of the Office of Come unications have received informal
indications from Security Office personnel to the effect that classified
Agency information is being transmitted on the Security Office domestic
teletype facilities, but that it is protected by certain security features,
presumably of a cryptographic nature, devised by the Security Office.
2. In view of the responsibility placed on the ADCO by ,.gency reggu-
lation for maintaining ceicat bons security through the provision
of appropriate cryptographic systems or related secrecy equipoeent, it is
requested that you advise whether there is a requirement for transmitting
classified information over the teletype facilities. If so, it is the desire
of the office of Communications to evaluate whatever security features might
now be employed for the protection of the classified traffic, and to modify
or replace the system if necessary for the improvenent of security.
3. In the event that no recuireent for classified traffic now exists,
but a future requirement is anticipated, this Div: lion will. be pleased to
assist in the planning and determination of requirements for cryptographic
support. For assistance of this sort of this Division may
be reached on extension 2376.
