The President, in a memorandum to the Heads of ticeoutive
Departments and Agencies dated June 13, 1958, announced my appoint-
ment as chairman of the Government Unit of the United Givers TWA.
He gave the assurance that all government personnel vill vish to
join me in making this coosnunity-vide fund-raising effort an out-
standing success.
This effort unites the appeals of the scores of Health
and Welfare Council agencies, all six of the Americana ?atioanl, Rod
Cross local chapters, the USO, hospital care, Arthritis and Rhsu-
matisa, 1ltltiple Sclerosis, and such national health agsaoies as
Mental Health, Cerebral Palsy and Help for Retarded Children. The
great need ..?vell as the great merit of these causes requires the
finest and best leadership available.
For these reasons, therefore, I would appreciate it greatly
if you would serve as Chairman for the Central Intelligence Apney
and select a Vice Chairman to carry out the details of the c ilp
organization.
While the appeal does not get underway officially vmtil the
latter part of September, we will need to commence the pre-c pttgn
organization and planning in the very near future. In order to do
so, I hope I may have your acceptance and the naive of your Vice Chair-
man as soon as possible.
Your assistance is earnestly requested and vill be greatly
appreciated in this most important civic responsibility.
