WOMEN IN THE WORK FORCE
The current labor force is about 90 million people. Of this, 40% are
women.
Of all the people who have entered the labor force in the last 10 years ,
60% are women.
There are 64 million children under 18. Forty per cent of them have
working mothers.
There are 6 million children in this country under 6. One-third of
these have working mothers.
Forty-three per cent of all working age females are in the labor force.
Re the birth rate: During the past 20 years the birth rate has declined
30%. The birth rate was once 4. 3 million. In 1973 it was 3. 1 million. The
trend is still down and in 1974, it will be about 3. 0 million. The above
occurred at a time when there has been a 29% increase in the number of
women of child-bearing age (15-44).
Opinion Polls: In 1946, 18% of the women polled approved of females
working. In 1973, 65% of the women polled felt that it was normal for women
to work. In 1973, of that 65%, among the women under 30, 83% approved of
women working. Of all the female working population, one-half report they
prefer not to work at all or at least not more than part time.
