C. 8 January 1948 e Si a t'C. 3+a Ell 3 ii'i .+~U 1978 % IS S S By The Central Intelligence Agency desires to obtain statistical data concerning 1946 imports into the United States of certain materials, which data, it has been ascertained, is in the possession of the bureau of the Census. A previous request for the same statistics addressed to your Bureau by the Department of the Navy elicited the reply that the data *=warned could be furnished provided funds amounting to $1,040.67 were made available to the Census Bureau. This Agency has subsequently determined that it has a aomeon interest in this data with the Department of the Navy and, therefore, is prepared to sake available to the Bureau of the Census funds in the above amount for the production of the required material. The information desired includes the following, with reference to the below list of commodities: Amount of each material brought to the U.S., by gross weight in pounds, broken down by three tonnage classes of vessels (less than 50000 DWT. 50000 to 10,000 DBT, and over 100000 D!!T), and broken down also by ocean routes traversed. For example: Route: Caribbean to Atlantic Coast U.S. Less than 5,000 DWT 14 voyages Gross Wgt. 102,058,591 Lbs. 5,000 - 10,000 " 1 " 6,696,693 " Over 10,000 None None Baltic Scandinavian Iceland and Greenland to Atlantic Coast U.S. Over 10,000 DWT 3 voyages Gross Wgt. 31,076,800 Lbs. Etc. Total Imports 1946 139,812,084 Lbs. Also, the country of origin of the commodity, where shown in customs records, the port where the voyage originated (or country, if the port is not known), and either the United States part of entry or at least the area of entry, such as Atlantic, Pacific, Gulf, eta.
