Have your local electrician make the connections and advise him to install a switch at a convenient location. The cylinder should revolve toward the operator as he faces the machine. If it revolves backward-change the motor lead wires in order to reverse its direction of rotation. The motor should rotate counter-clockwise when viewed facing the pulley. (See plumbing diagram on Page 4.) Connect drain valve to 1%" Drain Pipe by means of rubber hose provided with machine. Connect water supply line to inlet pipe. A steady flow of water at approximately 4 gallons per minute is important. Supply lines must be large enough to deliver this amount. Where excessive pressure and/or varying pressure may deliver excessive or uncertain volume of water, a Pako #9136 Mesurflo should be installed between the Valve and the machine. This device regulates the flow at 4 gallons per minute. Use corrosion-resistant pipe and valves (Brass or Stainless) to prevent danger of rust and dirt being, carried into the Washer. OPERATION Drain Hypo from prints before putting them in washer. This will reduce time required for washing. Variations in chemical characteristics, temperature and rate of flow of wash water, and in size and weight of prints, make it impractical to give hard and fast rules for wash time required. Experiments indicate that about 150 8"x10" double weight prints will wash in 40? water in 45 minutes. (This is equivalent to about 500 to 600 Amateur size prints.) Recommended rate of flow is 4 to 6 gallons per minute. Length of wash time should be determined when operation of the machine is started by using the potassium permanganate test for elimination of hypo. Checking performance in this manner will allow you to determine the time required for com- plete washing of various quantities, sizes, and weight of prints at a given water temperature and rate of flow. After washing prints, lay them on the open cylinder door to drain before drying. They will then dry faster with less heat. FOOT PEDAL-To raise cylinder out of tank, step down on Foot Pedal, 1 (Fig. 1), located at the right end of machine. Allow Pedal Lock, 2 (Fig. 1), to hold Foot Pedal down. The cylinder can be raised and lowered while the machine is in operation. TO OPEN CYLINDER-Rotate cylinder by hand until the index pin engages and holds the cylinder in position so the cylinder door may be opened. Push the Door Locks, 3 (Fig. 1), down- ward and lift door open. In this position, prints may be placed on the cylinder door for draining. DRAIN VALVE-To drain tank, open drain valve, 7 (Fig. 1), located under right end of tank. The valve is designed so that only Slight pressure on the Dia- phragm is necessary to shut off the flow of water. CAUTION: Excessive tightening may damage the valve Diaphragm. The valve diaphragm is easily changed. Method of fitting parts is shown in figure IA. INSERT VALVE STEM INTO KEYHOLE SLOT, THEN SLIDE TO CENTER OF THE DISC. device built into the Water Inlet casting. Air drawn in through the three small holes in the casting causes bubbling action for greater washing efficiency. The Aspirator serves as a vacuum-breaker but doesrnot neces- sarily meet all local sanitary code requirements. See Fig. 3. ALGAE-Slippage of the Drive Rollers and smudging of prints may result from Algae deposits carried into the machine with the water. This can be prevented by draining the tank and allowing it to dry out each night. In extreme cases, occasional scrubbing with a bristle brush may be necessary. END PANELS-To remove End Panels, 5 (Fig. 1), lift up and pullout out. BELT ADJUSTMENT-To tighten the Motor Belt, loosen the bolts on the Motor Base and slide Motor toward the rear of the machine. To tighten the cylinder Drive Belt, loosen the Pulley Stud, 4 (Fig. 1), and slide downward in adjusting slot. Both belts should be just tight enough to drive without slipping- excessive tautness causes needless wear. STUFFING BOX-(See Figure 2)-Threads on the Stuffing Box Casing are left hand. To tighten cap, revolve counter-clockwise. To stop leakage through the Stuffing Box, compress the Pack- ing, D, around the Drive Shaft, H, by turning the screw cap, B, counter-clockwise. Do not tighten the Screw Cap so far as to hamper the free operation of the Drive Shaft, H. The oil- impregnated packing, D, inside Stuffing Box may be lightly oiled to provide lubrication. CAUTION: Excess oil may be forced into the tank when Stuffing Box Screw Cap is tightened. Never Pack Stuffing Box with grease. TO REPLACE THE PACKING-Remove the Drive Pulley, A, unscrew the Stuffing Box Cap, B, and remove the brass Stuffing Box Gland, C. Remove old Packing, D, and Replace in reverse order. Parts are assembled on the Washer in the following sequence: 1. Stuffing Box Casing E. 2. Copper Gasket F. 3. Tighten Retaining Nut G to Casing E. 4. Stuffing Box Packing D. 5. S.A.E. 20 oil is suitable. Oil the pulley Stud, 4 (Fig. 1) once a month. Oil the motor, 6 (Fig. 1) every month. (One drop in each of 2 oil cups.) Oil the Pedal Shaft Bearings once a month. Keep the Felt washers on the lower end of the Lift Rods well saturated with oil. Apply oil sparingly, and wipe off excess lubricant and dirt. CLEANING-The Pakolux Washer is fabricated of Stainless Steel in those parts most subject to corrosive action. However, periodic cleaning is recommended, the frequency depending on the amount of exposure to chemicals, and the nature of the water supply. Iron rust or other impurities from the water supply will collect in cracks and rough spots, such as welds.
