Approved For Release 1999/09/20 : CIA-RDP78-05597A000200010024-8 25X1A9a In the Eastern Branch the phaseout of the NIS program is proceeding smoothly (but not painlessly). Since May 1973 the staff has been reduced from 14 to 7, including the branch secretary. In that time the processing of five General Surveys and five detailed sections has been completed. Only six more Surveys remain on the schedule, and two of these. are nearing completion. Seven more detailed sections are on the books, with work begun on all but two of them. The estimated date for the completion of the Eastern Branch workload is March 1974, provided the contributions arrive on schedule and the staff stays at the present level. To accomplish this task, juggling of responsibilities and some extra effort will be involved, i.e., combining the editing and coordinating of chapters and the writing of the Country Profile on Turkey with editing that Survey. The workload could conceivably be accomplished with the loss of two more professionals, but probably not before May 74. Approved For Release 1999/09/20 : CIA-RDP78-05597A000200010024-8
