SUBJECT: NISD/BGI Activity Report for June 1973
A. Research and Technical Support Activity and Processing
1. Contributor production (U/OU)
NIS contributors turned in 18 manuscripts in June, which
brought the total submissions by USIB and non-USIB contributors during
FY73 to 202 General Survey chapters, 12 detailed NIS, 2 port sheets,
and 1 urban area study. Still to come is a scheduled commitment of
some 30 contributions to General Surveys which are currently in
process. The Appendix provides a breakdown, by agency, of NIS con-
tributor production.

3. NISD processing (U/OU)
Editorial processing of General Surveys on India, Mozambique,
and East Germany (less Armed Forces) were completed in June and
sent forward for Committee review. Comments were received and the
Surveys were readied for the printer on Honduras (less Country Profile)
and East Germany. The Armed Forces chapter was not included in the

East Germany Survey because of production problems in DIA; this
unit should be completed in early July. July review by the Committee
is expected for General Surveys on Brazil, South Korea, and possibly
Italy.
4. NIS publication (U/OU)
PSD published 15 units in June. Those disseminated were
General Surveys on Guinea, Iceland, Iran, and Sweden. The Highways
of Czechoslovakia and the Oceanography of the Central South Atlantic
Ocean were also published.
Other OBGI items published were two Map Acquisitions Lists,
a GM Report, and one NIS Notice.
5. Miscellaneous NISD support (C)
a. Both the on-shelf published Gener25X4A'r and newly
received manuscripts on Greece were provided

b. DCI/SAVA requested and received a complete set of pub-
lished NIS on Burma.
c. DDS&T was sent seven NIS studies on Marine Climate and
Oceanography covering parts of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Ocean
Basins.
d. OER was provided superseded NIS on Armed Forces
General, Ground, and Air Forces on the Arabian Peninsula.
B. Phaseout (U/OU)
A phaseout of the NIS has begun pursuant to the DCI's decision that
the Agency will no longer provide resources for the program.
1. Workload
Plans call for completion of all General Surveys scheduled for
FY73 and for processing of an additional five surveys to be submitted in
FY74. Areas to be covered on the revised FY74 schedule are Denmark,
Republic of China, Spain, Turkey, and Czechoslovakia.
